Depression can worsen over time and lead to, or be accompanied by, other disorders such as anxiety, substance abuse, or relationship problems.
In many cases, depression is just the result of other underlying disorders that were never detected.
Therapy can help you identify the root cause/s of your depression and provide you with multiple new skills to eliminate your depressive symptoms.
Learning effective strategies to change your negative thought patterns (something that is called cognitive restructuring), is one of the secrets to win the battle against depression.
Explained in simple terms, cognitive restructuring is a way to rewire the way you think.
Your thoughts cause you emotions...and your emotions make you act in specific ways (which end up reinforcing the way you think).
When we experience depression, our lives are usually trapped in a never-ending loop of negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Many times, we cannot change what happens in our life, but we can definitively change the way that we look at things and respond.
In many cases, depression is fueled by past difficult experiences that were never processed and continue to impact our minds, emotions, and relationships.
It is not uncommon for symptoms of depression to be present for a long time. Many people describe carrying a sensation of emptiness inside for as long as they can remember... like a void that can never be filed.
Living with depression can feel like you are pushing a heavy stone up the hill every day. Therapy can alleviate you from carrying that heavy weight .
The length of the treatment depends on different factors. Some people feel satisfied after resolving the symptoms that brought them to therapy at the present time, while others feel enthusiastic about achieving further levels of improvement in their lives and relationships.
I encourage my clients to discuss their needs and collaborate in the creation of treatment goals.
Over the years and through the use of different therapeutic tools and trainings, I have developed an approach to treat depression that facilitates deep, long lasting change -in a considerably short period of time.
As I always explain to my clients, “My role is to teach you how to live without me”. In a way, it is similar to parenting. If we did a good job, our children will learn the necessary tools to leave the nest and fly. They could come back once in a while for some love or extra help to adjust to new life circumstances, but they are able to independently thrive.
Many of my clients return through the years to discuss stressors, life transitions, or new circumstances. I certainly enjoy to see how much they have grown and help them manage their new experiences. We all need sometimes a reminder of what we have learned to be able to apply it to new challenges.
It is a common to try to solve problems by talking with friends or family members. In fact, they are the best emotional support we usually find.
But unfortunately, they do not always have the professional training necessary to understand the psychological causes of all our problems or what effective techniques we could utilize to cope with them.
During therapy sessions, you can identify the causes of your depression and I can help you develop -what I call a manual or emotional blue print- to help you understand what triggers your sadness and happiness.
Research suggests that one of the number one healing factors in a therapy treatment is the relationship with the therapist.
I strongly believe that emotional support is what helps us navigate better the challenges of life. Once a treatment begins, my clients are aware that they could call me 24/7 if a crisIs arises (see further information on FAQ page).
After struggling with depression myself, I was able to understand how challenging it could be for a person to function in the every day life when dealing with depressive symptoms.
I know how it feels like and I can show you the way out of depression. You don't have to do it alone.
