COVID-19 UPDATE: OFFERING ONLINE THERAPY AND IN-OFFICE SERVICES. WEST LOS ANGELES
When people have been diagnosed with ADHD, they usually start to take a look back at their lives using the lens of ADHD.
They begin to understand many things, but also think about what could have been different if they would have been diagnosed earlier.
Perhaps you could have completed college?
Last longer in a job position?
Would you still be in that romantic relationship?
Would the people around you have criticized you the same way?
Would your self-esteem be different today?
Growing up with ADHD can leave emotional scars and lead to life difficulties such as:
-Financial problems
-Addictions
-Difficulty to sustain a job
-Legal problems, traffic tickets, and accidents
-Low self-esteem
-Depression, anxiety, and suicidality
-Poor physical health
-Difficulty to complete school
-Relationship problems
If you were just diagnosed with ADHD or think you may have it, it is important that you look for professional help. A treatment that focuses on ADHD can help you improve your everyday life, self-esteem, and relationships. Don't give up on your dreams and goals. They are all possible.
If you have ADHD, you may:
- miss deadliness
- make impulsive decisions
- start many projects, but struggle to complete them
- get impatient or frustrated easily
- interrupt others and talk a lot
- struggle to sustain focus or concentration
- loose things like your keys, phone, or forget to bring what you need
- plan to do many things tomorrow, just to end up frustrated for completing just a third of what you have planned
- experience mood changes
- avoid tasks that are long or feel boring
- feel restless, move a lot, and/or fidget
- forget appointments
Unfortunately, these behaviors can strain the patience of the people around you and put you on a never ending loop of frustration, problems, and unreached goals.
Often, other psychiatric or learning disorders can occur along with ADHD. It is important to recognize, diagnose, and treat them as well to cut the repeated pattern of failures.
Therapy can help you learn effective strategies to manage your ADHD symptoms, improve your organization and communication, and help you develop conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
Additionally, couples therapy and/or family therapy can help you improve relationships and help your loved ones understand the struggles caused by ADHD so they can better support you.
Therapy for ADHD can help you find your talents and support you in the fulfillment of your goals and dreams.
Many people with ADHD are found to have above-average levels of intelligence and many are highly creative and inventive.
ADHD may give you a different perspective on life and let you come up with ideas or solutions that most people would never think of. In fact, many of the world's best inventive thinkers had ADHD.
Although it is true that having ADHD can make you struggle to concentrate or make you feel bored easily, it can also give you the ability to concentrate for several hours in a row in something that really interests you.
Have you discovered what interests you? What is your original talent?
Many people discover that their undiagnosed ADHD has been fueling their relationship problems, or other conditions such as anxiety or depression.
This scenario is more common for adults, since ADHD has been formally recognized as a disorder in the late 1960's. However, ADHD cases started to be more effectively identified in the 1990s and the public in general and professionals are gradually starting to become more aware of how it looks like.
This simply indicates that the older you are right now, the more chances you have of never been diagnosed as a child. Unfortunately, this means that you have struggled alone with your ADHD symptoms.
It is never too late to be diagnosed and I usually see that for many people, receiving the diagnosis of ADHD is a gift. Many report that they finally have a name for their daily struggles.
Therapy can help you understand your condition. It can help you increase awareness of your behaviors/habits and help you learn skills and strategies to change your life and relationships.
Medication has been found to be highly effective for many people with ADHD. During therapy, I will inform you more about this option and provide you with a referral to visit a doctor who could help you evaluate if the use of medication is right for you.
You don't have to go through this alone. Having the right guidance and tools can help you achieve your goals.
What are your life dreams?
